Σελήνη

Selene (Σελήνη) is the goddess of the Moon in Greek mythology, one of the most powerful lunar deities of the ancient world. Every night, she travels across the sky in her two-horse chariot, pulling the moon behind her. Selene is the daughter of the Titans Hyperion and Theia, making her part of the primordial divine lineage of Greek mythology, sister of the sun god Helios and the dawn goddess Eos. Selene and Artemis were both associated with Hecate and all three were regarded as lunar goddesses, but only Selene was regarded as the personification of the Moon itself, embodying its light, cycles, and celestial presence.

Step 1

She was usually represented as a woman with long hair, the moon (often in crescent form) on her head, a recurring iconography in ancient Greek art and literature. Her equivalent in Roman religion and mythology is the goddess Luna. As Luna, she had temples in Rome on the Aventine and Palatine hills, highlighting her importance in Roman worship and mythology.

Step 2

Pink (sky) is a strong color seen as a variation on red (love, passion, anger), but is also believed to represent compassion and inner peace. It is believed to have a soothing effect on the mind and can help individuals connect with their emotions and inner selves, making it a powerful color in symbolic and emotional storytelling. Purple (clouds) is often used to symbolize creativity, royalty, wealth and extravagance. Here, purple is not a menace, it gently hugs pink, creating a visual balance between power and softness. The lantern is a symbol of hope and safety for those seeking freedom, often used in art and visual narratives to represent guidance, protection, and inner light.

Step 3

The composition is inspired by vintage gothic movie posters and illustrated book covers, particularly those from mid-20th-century cinema and literature. These images often featured solitary female figures, dramatic architecture, and an atmosphere suspended between romance and unease. The towering castle, flowing dress, and moonlit sky echo the visual language of classic gothic horror and fantasy posters, where mystery, femininity, and symbolism were central to the narrative. This reference to vintage gothic imagery reinforces the timeless, mythological quality of the scene, bridging mythology, cinema, and illustrated storytelling.
